Disco ball award shines light on faculty, staff and resident team efforts at UCSF Fresno

In searching for a gift to improve faculty, staff and resident wellness last year, Ingrid Singh, residency and fellowship programs supervisor in the UCSF Fresno Department of Family and Community Medicine, chose a disco ball award.

A disco ball has thousands of facets that reflect light in many directions – an appropriate symbol to acknowledge the importance of each individual’s contributions at UCSF Fresno. And Ingrid says she chose the ball for the inscription on its base: “Discos to you for being a team player.”

And since its inception in Family and Community Medicine, the Team Player Disco Ball Award has taken off, spreading across the branch campus.

“Eventually one of the faculty asked if I could order one for him to circulate in the East Medical Plaza,” Ingrid says. “And later in the year, Nick Rubulcaba, Information Systems supervisor, inquired about the disco ball, she said. “It was then that I gave a disco ball to circulate between departments. It makes me so happy that it’s really taking off!”

Each month the recipient of the disco ball chooses the next person to receive it. The aim is to recognize the contributions of each other. The recipient finds someone, based on experiences with the person and her/his demonstration of being a team player, to present with the disco ball. The new recipient should understand how they have affected the person giving it to them, for a specific task or support with an issue.

Ingrid says so far, no one has found it difficult identifying a worthy recipient.

Earlier this month, Leland Vander Poel, audio visual/multi-media support technician, delivered the Team Player Disco Ball Award to Leslie Irion, administrative assistant in the UCSF Fresno Psychiatry Residency Program.

“I selected Leslie because she is truly the definition of a team player,” Leland says. “I frequently collaborate with Leslie in supporting Zoom video conferences for the Psychiatry faculty and residents.  Often, this requires last minute changes or updates to accommodate offsite participants.  She is always accessible and ready to help when the occasion arises.  Whether it is creating a new Zoom session on the fly, or tracking down participants for vital info, she maintains a calm demeanor and helps resolve any issues that may arise. It is always much appreciated.”
